Betsy Devos: Private Institutions Proving Themselves against the Public School System

In A recent interview with philanthropy Roundtable, Betsy DeVos discusses how important the notion of school choice will be in the future. While this interview was conducted in 2013, it remains entirely relevant to this day and gives the American public their first glimpse at the future Secretary of Education. Now, Betsy DeVos is a strong leader in her role as Secretary of Education. This is given her the chance that she needed to really shine in this role. One of the things that make her so notable is her controversial views on the education process. As Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos is the head of the American public school system. As such, she is expected to advocate for its continued success into the future. This is not how Betsy DeVos feels about the public school system, in fact, she would feel better if it didn’t exist at all.

When you hear that, it can sound a little scary. Parents may feel as though this will prevent their children from receiving any type of education, but that is simply not true. Betsy DeVos is advocating for a private type of education system where parents are sitting in the driver’s seat of their children’s future. In this system, parents will collaborate with local or online school communities to secure the best educational future for their children. In this way, they have become active in this process, as they search for the best possible options for their kids. These programs may be competitive, that it will encourage them to look for something that will match their children’s learning style and their own families personal values. When looking into the private sector parents can account for religion, cultural considerations, and even their children’s learning styles. This will ensure a level of success that would not be possible in a public school.

Unfortunately, this is not something that can happen overnight. These particular systems need to grow and develop networks. In states like Florida, Indiana, Michigan, and Illinois lawmakers are pushing for the development of such institutions as an alternative to public schools. It seems that even these states have developed a distaste for the underperformance experienced by schools in the public sector. Parents are even being educated about the valuable experience from online schools. Through these types of institutions, children are encouraged to be more self-directed and they are given bigger responsibilities when it comes to their educational goals. There are lots of times where they are allowed to self-study, but they do participate in large class experiences as well through WebCams and online posting boards.

Betsy DeVos simply wants Americans to look at the issue and noticed that there is a growing gap in education. In order to fill that gap, she believes that parents need to take a drastic role in their children’s education and push for better standards. Those better stingers already exist was in these alternative institutions, they simply need to be given the chance to prove themselves against the public school system.
